If you’re planning on a big home renovation or remodel project anywhere in Philadelphia County, chances are you’re going to need some equipment for the job such as a roll-off dumpster or heavy machinery for certain jobs like digging out a pool. If you, like many Philadelphia residents, have a small front yard or your office touches the sidewalk or street and don’t have any space for a 20-yard dumpster to fit without obstructing street or sidewalk traffic, you’re going to need what’s called a “Street Closure for Equipment Placement” permit. We’ll go into specifics below:
Philadelphia County requires notification for equipment placement if the job is going to obstruct lanes of a street or public walkway in any residential or commercial district. The application process is simple but is in place to protect residents as well as allow proper detours of any areas that must be closed off for the duration of your project. Without some kind of city intervention you can imagine how much of a mess the denser city areas and narrow lane residential areas could get! Philadelphia enacts heavy fines upon any obstruction of the street without proper permits, and, if it became enough of a problem, may even tow your equipment off to impound due to non-compliance.
The permit is very cheap and only costs $25 per 40 feet of space (40ft is equal to two parking spaces for an easy point of reference). Approval usually only takes one business day and a single-page application, however, you MUST give 10 days notice before your project starts. You can find the Philadelphia County Equipment Placement Application HERE and fill it out to take into the City of Philadelphia Streets Department, located at 730 Municipal Services Building 1401 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, Philadelphia, PA 19102. This is all part of the Make Philadelphia More Beautiful movement; the city encourages commercial and residential improvements requiring roll-off dumpster placement but understandably needs to make sure they follow proper protocol and aren’t endangering local residents.
